Air BP has taken delivery of a new 5-axle trailer at Christchurch International Airport to support the US Antarctic Programme. Built by Lowes Industries in Christchurch, the trailer features SAF IntraDisc integrated axles and suspensions, WABCO braking and intelligent trailer programme, and Alcoa alloy wheels.
During the intercontinental airlift season between October and March over 100 return flights take supplies from Christchurch to McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. Air BP has a range of truck and trailer combinations that service both the US and RNZAF aircraft on these flights. The new trailer holds 35,000 litres and takes four fills to refuel the 120,000-litre capacity tanks of a C-17 Globemaster.
Greg Hill, Air BP airport manager, says the new tanker trailer was designed to meet both the NZ EPA Flammable Liquids Tank Wagon Code and Air BP‘s international standards for refuelling vehicle design.
