Just as the year started, it ended with an Iveco test, this time a Stralis. This is the second Iveco road tested in New Zealand Trucking in 2016 and the performance certainly justifies this model‘s inclusion.
The brand had growing sales during the year, particularly in the South Island, with this particular tractor being purchased by Merv Coard in Christchurch to run in Toll Tranzlink colours. An 8×4 AT13 Stralis powered by a Cursor 13 505hp engine producing 2199Nm (1622lbs/ft) of torque, an Iveco EuroTronic 11 6AS26010D 16-speed AMT gearbox, Meritor 46-160GP rear axles and Hendrickson HAS 460 airbag suspension with Iveco leaf spring suspension at the front.
The rig worked on local deliveries during the day and ran swaps to Picton four nights a week, accumulating kilometres quickly.
Merv retained the Stralis, undertaking very few repairs outside of routine servicing, until about a year ago when it was added to the growing fleet of Transport Rangiora.
The Stralis was converted from a tractor to a rigid and had a 5-axle trailer fitted. It runs on 50-tonne certificates hauling mainly bulk, timber, and general freight around the region.
Murray Pascoe, managing director of Transport Rangiora, is happy with his purchase and, with around 900,000 kilometres on the clock, believes it is the equal of any other in the fleet.
