The Special Rigs for Special Kids trucking event has been postponed due to the current Covid-19 lockdown.

The event, which was meant to take place this Sunday, takes children with special needs for a journey around Dunedin in large trucks, followed by a barbecue and family events.

Around 200 truckers and more than 300 children would usually take part in the event.

The event was cancelled last year.

“Due to the current situation we are unable to run Special Rigs for Special Kids on the 29th of August as we realise there is a large possibility we will not be back to level one within a week,” the organiser said on the event’s Facebook page.

“We have to give our sponsors and strategic planning at least a week’s warning to cancel the event,” it said.

“We are hugely disappointed to do this for a second year. But with a large amount of effort behind the scenes over that last couple of days we are going to give it one more shot this year.”

The organisers said if everything goes to plan and if the country is back at level one, Special Rigs for Special Kids will be held on the 31 October 2021.
