The Waste Minimisation (Tyres) Regulations passed into law at the end of  September.

The Regulation sets out a schedule of fees that will be applied to all tyres used on a motor vehicle (including trailers) or aircraft.

The fees are set by regulation and for a Heavy Goods Vehicle over 12t. tThe fee will be $27.93 per tyre and for trailers over 10t the fee will also be $27.93 per tyre.

The fee is applied at the point of import or manufacture.

Fees will start being collected from 1 March 2024 with the full Tyrewise scheme going live September 2024.

The scheme is part of the Government’s wider waste minimisation programme to reduce waste and transition to a low-carbon circular economy.

The regulation aims to level the playing field for the cost of disposal of used tyres and to provide a fund for collection transport, while incentives for eligible processing and manufacturing along with R&D grants will stimulate the development of innovative end uses in the domestic market.
